2a — Loose Waves

A subtle S-wave through the length. Close to straight at the root, with a soft bend mid-shaft. Your hair has more volume than straight hair but less mechanical support than 2b or 2c.

What 2a usually looks like

  • Visible bend through the length, barely any curl at the root
  • Can look straight if over-brushed or over-styled
  • Gets flat fast with heavy products
  • Dries quickly — usually in under 2 hours
  • Most styling problems are product-weight problems

Daily routine

  1. Shampoo 3–4× a week with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.
  2. Light conditioner on the mid-shaft to ends. Avoid the root.
  3. A pea-size amount of mousse or a spritz of spray gel on damp hair.
  4. Scrunch gently, do not touch after.
  5. Air-dry or diffuse on cool, low speed.

What to look for

Less is more for 2a. One styling product is usually all you need.

Styling mousse or spray gel

Water-based, light hold, no heavy butters or oils
Curl creams, butters, or anything labeled 'rich' or 'intense'

Gentle shampoo

Sulfate-free, moisturizing but not conditioning-heavy
Clarifying shampoos more than once a month — strips 2a fast

Common 2a mistakes

  • 01Using curl creams designed for 3a+ — flattens the wave completely.
  • 02Brushing dry — kills the pattern and creates frizz.
  • 03Over-washing with regular shampoo — strips the length and makes it look limp.
