3a — Loose Curls

Big, loose spring curls about the width of sidewalk chalk. The loosest of the curly family — closer to 2c than to 3c.

What 3a usually looks like

  • Loose, defined ringlets
  • Can stretch to look wavy when wet
  • Holds a refresh well — bounces back easily
  • Shrinks 25–50% wet-to-dry

Daily routine

  1. Sulfate-free shampoo 2–3× a week.
  2. Conditioner every wash, detangle wet with wide-tooth comb.
  3. On soaking wet hair: leave-in + medium-hold gel or mousse.
  4. Scrunch upward, diffuse on low or air-dry.
  5. Satin pillowcase or loose pineapple overnight.

What to look for

3a likes lighter product than 3b/3c but more than 2c. A leave-in plus one styler is usually enough.

Water-based leave-in

Water or aloe first, light humectants for humidity
Heavy butters as a leave-in base

Medium-hold gel or mousse

Clean cast that breaks easily, film-forming polymers
Extreme-hold gels built for 3c/4a

Common 3a mistakes

  • 01Using 3c/4a products — weighs 3a down and kills bounce.
  • 02Over-washing — 3a does not need daily cleansing.
  • 03Raking product through — breaks the ringlets apart.
