3c — Tight, Dense Curls

Pencil-width corkscrews that pack dense. Frizz-prone, moisture-hungry, and often misidentified as 3b (too loose) or 4a (too tight).

What 3c usually looks like

  • Pencil-width corkscrews
  • Curls cluster and pack close to the scalp
  • Shrinks 30–50% from wet to dry
  • Halo frizz at the crown is a signature issue
  • Needs richer moisture than 3b

Daily routine

  1. Low-sulfate shampoo 1–2× a week.
  2. Deep condition every wash; wet-detangle section by section.
  3. On soaking wet hair: leave-in + curl cream + gel (LOC or LCO).
  4. Scrunch upward, plop 15 min or diffuse on low.
  5. Satin bonnet or loose pineapple overnight.

What to look for

3c likes moisture-rich leave-ins but still wants a styler that gives a cast.

Water-based leave-in

Water or aloe first, glycerin, no drying alcohols
Thin leave-ins meant for wavy hair — not enough moisture

Curl cream + gel combo

Medium-rich cream, medium-hold gel, film-forming polymers
Heavy butters as a base — too heavy for 3c's pattern

Common 3c mistakes

  • 01Using generic 'curly hair' products designed for 3b — not rich enough.
  • 02Using 4a-targeted products — too heavy, leaves residue.
  • 03Touching wet curls after styling — instant frizz.
